Which episodes tug at your heartstrings? Which episodes make you cry? I'm a sentimentalist so my list is pretty long. Here's my list- tell me yours!

1- Fools in April
Why- The prank that Squidward pulled on Spongebob... and the way Spongebob cries and runs off. It breaks my poor little heart. The part where Squidward apologizes is so, so sweet.

2- Pizza Delivery
Why- The mean customer yells at Spongebob, throws the pizza in his face after all his hard work... and Spongebob cries. Made all the sweeter when Squidward stands up for the little guy. I work in customer service, and there have been times where I've been yelled at so badly by a customer that I cried. This episode is hard to watch when you're an adult.

3- Hooky
Why- This episode isn't actually sad, but there's one scene that breaks my heart every time. When Krabs thinks that Sponge and Pat have been taken by the hooks, he blames himself, and starts to cry. Oh, that really hurts to listen to... Poor Krabs.

4- The Chaperone
Why- The scene where Spongebob accidentally ruined Pearl's prom and he runs away in tears. Poor little guy.

5- Christmas Who
Why- The entire climax. Santa doesn't show up, Spongebob gets yelled at by random people, Squidward taunts him so badly that he bursts into tears, he gives Squidward a present despite how much of a jerk he's been, and he slowly walks away, sobbing like a tiny kid. And then, from there, the rest of the episode is so heartwarming that it brings tears to my eyes. Squidward is a good guy, very deep down.

6- Dying for Pie
Why- I don't know if other people cry at this episode, but I do. When Squidward thinks that Spongebob has passed away, Squidward bawls his eyes out and remarks, tearfully, "Well... at least I was able to make his last few hours meaningful..." I'm honestly tearing up just thinking about that scene. A very close friend of mine passed away unexpectedly five years ago, so maybe that's why I respond so emotionally to scenes like this.

7- Artist Unknown
Why- Squidward crushes Spongebob's self esteem and Spongebob literally ends up in the dump and cries.

8- Squeaky Boots
Why- The whole scene of Spongebob crying because he "lost the boots." I don't know why, but that scene always gets me...

9- Nature Pants
Why- I hate hate HATE watching Patrick cry. I'm kind of used to seeing Spongebob cry, but when Patrick cries, it makes me want to give up all hope and cry with him.

10- Home Sweet Pineapple
Why- Do I need an explanation?

11- Have You Seen This Snail?
Why- Anyone... ANYONE who has lost a pet will be heartbroken, and relieved, by this episode. I shed tears of grief AND joy at this one.

12- Patrick SmartPants
Why- Spongebob and Patrick lose their common ground, and their friendship drifts apart. We see them seperately, in their own houses, weeping over photo albums as they remember the times that came before.

13- Hello Bikini Bottom
Why- Aaron Springer was a writer on Spongebob since the very beginning. He worked on this show for over a deccade- 13 years- writing some of the most beloved episodes, including the infamous "Band Geeks." This was his very last episode. As if that weren't sad enough, the episode concludes with Spongebob and Squidward performing a duet called "Never Give Up," which ends with Spongebob on ukulele and Squidward on clarinet.... and Squidward's playing has never sounded so beautiful.

Yeah. Band Geeks is the most famous Spongebob episode, and it's always #1 on "Top Spongebob Episodes" lists. And, it was also #1 on Nickelodeon's "Top 100 Nickelodeon Moments."
infamous means famous for its bad reputation.

by the way, dying for pie and have you seen this snail?

^dis.

Also, I agree with the list. Have you noticed that a lot of earlier episodes focus on Squidward making Spongebob cry and then regret it?

Oh wow, I'm sorry, I'm a doof... I've been kind of out of it today lol
yeah, those are pretty great episodes, too... they both made me cry... ;_;

Yeah... Squidward, I think, used to be a lot meaner to Spongebob. I guess he just started grudingly putting up with him rather than being actively antagonistic. They definitely have a love/hate relationship, in a non-romantic way. Spongebob is like his annoying, clingy little brother who refuses to leave him alone. I know we're supposed to understand Squid's frustration, but he's been excessively mean to the guy in the past.

i love episodes like that.

by the way, dying for pie and have you seen this snail? are my favorite pre-movie and post-movie episodes respectively.

Have You Seen This Snail? And Christmas Who? Usually come to mind. Also, the movie.

I agree with your list here :) The saddest one for me would have to be "Have You Seen This Snail". I especially tear up when SpongeBob sings that song and he starts to cry and all that.

I'm surprised "Dumped" isn't on that list. While the SpongeBob-missing-Gary moments weren't quite as sad as the ones in "Have You Seen This Snail?", the meltdown scene where SpongeBob is begging Gary to come back and Patrick's line at the end were pretty emotional and were even accompanied with the saddest background music ever played on the show.

That episode IS really sad, I agree. It's pretty gut-wrenching! Tom Kenny's crying sounds so unnervingly realistic, especially in that episode.

To be honest, I really don't like that episode, though. The Spongebob scenes were done so beautifully and genuinely, but Patrick's behavior in the episode was so appallingly cruel that it prevents me from watching the ep.

I usually don't count the movie, because pretty much everybody agrees that it's sad. There isn't much debate.

Funnily enough, when I was 10 (when the movie came out,) I didn't think it was sad, because I knew that Sponge and Pat would be okay. Now, I'm 20, and guess what? I sob like a baby at that movie! D: I think it's because adults have more life experience- typically an adult has dealt with death, getting rejected from a job, et cetera, so the sad parts of The Spongebob Squarepants movie are "closer to earth" so to speak, and seem more real.

I love love LOVE "Dying for Pie." It's probably my favorite Spongebob/Squidward episode. "I'm gonna make Spongebob's final hours the BEST he's ever had! And this time, there's gonna be LOVE!" I get warm fuzzies from these two because even though Spongebob is annoying and Squidward is a grump, they love each other... ;__; poor Squidward didn't realize what he had until he almost lost him...

Have You Seen This Snail was like a punch in the heart. I never had the experience of a pet running away, but I've had pets die before. It's heartbreaking. One of my favorite parts of that one is when Sponge and Pat are sitting on Sponge's couch, and Sponge is quietly sobbing, and Patrick has his arm around him and is saying "Just let it out, that's right." Usually Patrick's scenes are loud comic relief, but that part was surprisingly subdued and sobered for him. Pat occasionally does really mean things, but overall, he's a good guy, and a really good friend. Patrick never stopped trying to comfort and help Spongebob in his time of need.

I confused this with your other thread, saw "Christmas Who?" and was going to punch you. Thankfully this is a different topic

Have You Seen This Snail?, Hello Bikini Bottom!, Fools in April and Dumped are the only episodes to make me cry/almost make me cry.

Have You Seen This Snail? is really the only emotional episode in my opinion and I think it handled it really well and is one of my favorites.

The Pink Purloiner is a pretty sad episode that I think deserves to make this list.
I really enjoyed that one, and it was pretty sad, but mostly I found it heartwarming.

I DO think it was handled very well. Every time I watch it, I'm surprised as to how LITTLE comic relief there is in it. It's like Spongebob's equivalent of "a very special episode."

No punching, thanks! :0 I have a low pain threshold
Those are all really sad episodes.. Recently, just thinking about "Hello Bikini Bottom" gets me all emotional

The SpongeBob SquarePants movie, even though It wasn't an episode, that was more emotional than Have You Seen This Snail and Dying for Pie combined IMO. The other episodes that had emotional moments are Dumped, The Pink Purlioner, Patrick SmartPants, Friend or Foe (the ending killed it though), Hello Bikini Bottom and Plankton's Pet

I'm just going to say i totally agree with you about all those! I think the Gary Come Home scene is actually the only one that almost brought me to tears, but there are a lot of moments that do tug on my hearstrings. Plankton is also good at tugging on my heartstrings. He's soooooo cute!

Yeah. Band Geeks is the most famous Spongebob episode, and it's always #1 on "Top Spongebob Episodes" lists. And, it was also #1 on Nickelodeon's "Top 100 Nickelodeon Moments."
"Infamous", BTW, means "bad", not good. ;). That's why he was asking.
For example, "One Course Meal" is 'infamous', and "Band Geeks' is 'famous' and beloved.

By the way, it's very weird how Hawaiian Cocktail doesn't make me cry at all, but instead makes me laugh.

An episode I'd put down as "sad" is "WhoBob WhatPants?" Not because of the way everyone treated SpongeBob, just how Squidward did. In some episodes you mentioned (Fools in April, Pizza Delivery), and Born Again Krabs as well, Squidward feels a little sympathetic for SpongeBob, but while everyone is concerned for the yellow sponge who has gone missing, Squidward says he would have slammed SpongeBob's face in the door twice as hard if he had known it would have been the last time he saw him. He also broke the radio that Sandy made to possibly get in touch with SpongeBob.
