The plot is straightforward enough. Pearl's date stood her up, so to give her a substitute, Krabs asks Spongebob to be Pearl's prom date.

I may be looking into this too much, but that's a little weird. Spongebob is an incredibly nice little dude, but... Pearl is 16. Spongebob is, at the very least, in his early/mid twenties. He's old enough to be living in his own house and paying his own bills and is by most accounts considered to be a grown adult. And he took a teenager to her high school prom.

Doesn't that seem a little weird? Especially since it was Krabs who suggested this... and suggested that SQUIDWARD (who's implied to be middle-aged) take Pearl to the prom.

....still a cute episode though

Yeah, I've always wondered about this too. (Although this obviously doesn't apply, if one were to go by the literal interpretation of the 7-14-86 birthdate, he'd actually be YOUNGER than Pearl.)

(Which is actually an interesting enough theory because Pearl treats the prospect of her prom date being SpongeBob like the prospect of going with some immature, weird 8th grader. :p)

I'll tell you what this episode always makes me wonder: what SpongeBob HIMSELF was like as a teenager. If this episode is any guide, he didn't somehow just spring into being as a bill-paying adult because he tells us he "couldn't even get a date for [his] own junior prom."

Now an episode about SPONGEBOB's referenced junior prom is one I'd like to see. We've been given glimpses of SpongeBob as a baby and as a child, but how about what he was like at 15/16? That would be a new avenue to explore.

But I digress...

Not as weird as Mr. Krabs making SpongeBob strip naked in front of Pearl and her friends in order to teach him a lesson about the hooks. :P

I think SpongeBob is young enough for it not to be considered weird. In "Tunnel of Glove" Pearl's friends joke about him being her boyfriend so he must be close enough to their age to be considered a peer or almost a peer.

I know. It's interesting that Pearl's gripe with going to the prom with him was "he's a nerd and he's weird" rather than "he's too old." Also kinda interesting because Spongebob looked a lot younger than most of the people there, and shorter.

If Patrick's line about community college is any indication, (and he and Spongebob are roughly the same age,) then Spongebob might be in his mid twenties. Patrick is old enough to have completed two years of college.

As for what he was like as a teenager... if the comic book is any indication, he was an awkward nerd with bad skin. Unsurprising.

0__0 I didn't think about that. That must have been pretty traumatizing for him.

You're probably right. And sponges might age differently than whales. Sponges can live to be extremely old, so maybe being a twenty-something, or even middle-aged, might be the equivalent of being a teen.

SpongeBob is supposed to be only a chaperone (it's like the tittle lol). That means he's not supposed to get along with Pearl, dance with and her, and stuff. All he need to do is simply to accompany Pearl, and simply look after her without doing anything funny. Now, the question is why did Mr. Krabs allows SpongeBob to do all the things? Maybe he just doesn't know?

Because Krabs is insane, Pearl is neurotic, and Spongebob is a ditz.

Mr. Krabs have a fetish on adult-children relationship. And decoy SpongeBob really wants Pearl.

Pearl was a lucky ::dolphin noise::.
Yes she was. Spongebob may not be long, tan, and handsome, but he's short, yellow, and adorable! And after a long, tiring night of dancing, you can use him as a pillow. (You might want earplugs though, he snores.)

Well, whether if he was 16, 20, or 40, It's SpongeBob, so of course it wouldn't matter if she dates him. He's adorable :P

He's totally adorable.

Even PEARL thinks he's adorable, when he's not being a pain in the butt.

Well I mean the point of the episode is called "The Chaperone" so that's why. Love this episode though, a 10/10 episode.
