I've brought up this topic before, but it's really old, so why bump a really old topic? :P

I've watched "The Krusty Sponge" numerous times, and can't help but feel it intentionally symbolises what Nickelodeon is doing to SpongeBob.

To show what I mean....

Gene Scallop comments on The Krusty Krab, it's pretty much a dump - people have described Nickelodeon's more recent programming as rather bad

However, he comments on SpongeBob's work, and comments, "If Krabs really wanted to soak up the dough, he'd sponge it up, he'd sponge it out! He'd over-sponge it! You can never have too much sponge!" - Nickelodeon has obviously realised of course, SpongeBob's what's soaking up all the ratings

Mr. Krabs makes everything in The Krusty Krab SpongeBob-themed, full of SpongeBob merchandise, SpongeBob rides, Squidward in a SpongeBob costume, Spongy Patties, even changing the name to "The Krusty Sponge" - Nickelodeon sells tons of SpongeBob merchandise, airs the show every day, also has SpongeBob food, SpongeBob costumed-characters and rides, in fact, the only thing they didn't really do is change their name to something SpongeBob-related (nor do they have SpongeBob ice cubes :P)

What do you think? Do you think The Krusty Sponge was inspired by how Nickelodeon is treating SpongeBob?

I can totally see the resemblance. I always considered it either coincidence or satire or coincidental satire mocking Nickelodeon in sponging up the entire channel.

OF course they are. They've been doing that forever.

I remember in the season 5 volume 1 commentary or trivia on this episode, I think they made some jokes about comparing it to their real life. Don't take my word for it tho.

Around the next couple of times I watched this episode, I began to see the resemblance between the episode and what Nick was really doing with SpongeBob at the time. Coincidental or not, this satire makes Krusty Sponge one of the better episodes of post-movie, imo, even if Squidward once again gets the short end of the stick here.

I can definitely see a resemblance with Nick and the episode. Not sure whether if it was a coincidence or actually intentional but there's no denying it that they are very similar situations.

I wouldn't say this episode is good at all because Mr. K, but your theory makes perfect sense, SBRM. Nickelodeon actually could be aware that they're airing the crap out of SpongeBob now, but just do it for the money.

I liked the episode ion my top 10 for Season 5.
