Hopefully I didn't make the mistake of making a topic someone already had done to death.

It could be a kids show because of its rating and the fact that it is on a children's network.

There are also some very inappropriate jokes too, which I love. (I'll never forget the scene in "My Pretty Seahorse" with the coin slot). The whole "Sailor Mouth" episode. etc.
I think the more the show can appeal to adults, the better. We all get older, after all. Wouldn't you still want to find the show funny?

I wouldn't say its an adult show. I think its a kids show that has content for adults to laugh at as well, so everyone can enjoy it.

All ages, not a mix of child and adult. There really isn't a such thing, that's an oxymoron. You're looking for all ages.

I think the jokes cracked in the show (especially in seasons 1-3) are adult understandable, yet simple for the little ones, making a whole, united show of all ages. :)

At least 7 or up, like it says in the tiny little corner. :p
But srsly, it is definitely for all ages. There is some adult humor, but there are also those kiddie jokes that the youngsters will laugh at.

Strictly speaking it's a kids show, so I voted for that, but one of the reasons it's so famous is that adults can (and do) enjoy it too.

Well it used to be for both kids and adults, but I think it's diminished from that time, now it feels like it's pushed towards kids more. For example pre-movie had it's themes, Rock-a-Bye Bivalve (Homosexuality), Karate Choppers (*ahem* Look it up if you don't get what I'm saying), The Panty Raid in Mid-Life Crustacean, etc. It just feels like Post-movie doesn't have those much of those things anymore, but that doesn't mean adults can't enjoy it. :)

Great post... you took the words out of my mouth.

My mom called this a kid show one time D:. *dolphin noise* that (Then again, she wouldn't let me watch an SB disc because it had Patchy. lol I hate him, but that's a generalization.) One thing that made Spongebob popular is the fact that it appealed to all types of audiences.

It's for both and the reason being is there are these secret jokes (I believe DMAP has posted a few of them already) that only adults can find and kids are all like "what?" I enjoy the adult humor in it.

SpongeBob isn't strictly for kids. In S1-S3, there were jokes both kids and adults enjoy. Heck, there are still some today. I'd definitely say it's a show for both.

Yeah, I agree with everyone else on the subject. Spongebob is supposed to be a kid's show, but it also grew on adults. I guess you can say the same on all Nicktoons back in the day anyways.

It's supposed to be a kids show. But sometimes, the show used comedy elements that attracted older viewers (who get the joke).

So, it's both really. It appeals to all type of audience.

It's funny, there's arguably fewer "dirty" jokes nowadays than there used to be in the early days, but people (and by people I mean parents) complain about them now a lot more than they used to. I think it's just because things have changed so much over the last decade and the perception of what is suitable for a kids show is different now.

I agree :) SpongeBob is definitely not an adult show, but has humour for the adults to enjoy

But there are still some adult jokes I've spotted in post-movie, such as in Squidtastic Voyage, Spy Buddies, The Hot Shot, Are You Happy Now?, 20,000 Patties Under the Sea

in one of the newer episodes around the time of the premier of sam and cat mr.krabs said money sucker but it sounded a lot like MOTHER F*****. I posted it on facebook and eveybody said the same and there are lots of hints like the names and episodes in general like spongbob and patrick are a post to be gay, krabs is cheap like most people on adult swim heck I an't even aloud to watch spongbob any more because my dad cot this so many times on this show and if they keep doing this no one is going to watch it. To be frank they should have taken it of all ready.

This. The adult humor has calmed down obviously from older episodes. Adults still can enjoy it but I know that they probably enjoy the older episodes better. It's what they grew on and what my older sister grew on.
