Many of the main personality traits of the characters are inspired by their respective animals. Steve Hillenburg was actually VERY smart when he designed these characters.

Sponges don't have muscles or bones, therefore they're spineless. They're also soft. This translated to Spongebob being a somewhat wimpy pushover of a character, and also a very cuddly character. Sponges don't really move around, so Spongebob is mostly a pacifist who doesn't like confrontation.

Starfish don't have brains, they can regenerate lost limbs, and they're actually pretty strong. So Patrick is an idiot, but also pretty tough. Starfish also eat mollusks- perhaps this explains why he wanted to step on Junior. Maybe he was planning on killing and eating the little scallop. Starfish are known to kill other animals, so this explains Patrick's random berserker rages.

Octopi are extremely intelligent. They also like to collect objects and arrange them. So Squidward is a pretentiously cultured aesthete who is fond of the arts, and gardening.

Crabs, like octopi, like to collect and hoard shiny objects. It's very obvious where his love of money comes from. Crabs are also very tough animals, and somewhat scary. So Crabs is a war veteran and a respected badass.

There's a mini-documentary thing that touches on this in the special features of the first movie's DVD. Hillenburg and Jacques Cousteau's son talk about the sea creatures the characters are based on and compare them.

Here it is, somebody uploaded it to YouTube.

that was really cool, I'm glad I watched that

He was indeed a former marine biologist. Also, SpongeBob was based on a character from a 1989 comic book Hillenburg made for the Ocean Institutes entitied "The Intertidal Zone" called "Bob the Sponge".

He went to the same school I did. We have a pretty great marine biology program.
