One of the most unsettling episodes for me a long time ago was Sleepy Time in Season 1. Not only was it eerie and unpredictable, but the episode was dark. Not like, the story was deep or something. No, it was just visually dimmer.

When I came back to watch Season 1 again, I was surprised to see how bright the episodes were. Those night scenes weren't as dark as I remember. This isn't some stupid mandella effect, I could've just had a dark TV or something, but I cannot find a single screenshot or video of something that would match what I remember.

The closest thing I can line it up to is a Youtube video from like 15 years ago, of the colors being *slightly* different in Pizza Delivery, although the Unregistered Hypercam 2 and the low quality J-PEG watermark of Nick.com gives me a hint it's probably not even suppost to be. I just DON'T know, though.

Help me out here, am I a little loony? A little twisted in the brain? A bit knotted in the thinker? Try saying that 3 times fast.

Maybe it's just because Nickelodeon did new masters for the Season 1 episodes?

By that, it's basically them making better quality versions of the Season 1 episodes and because of that, they got lightened in the process...

If it was because of the remasters, anything prior to 2017 would show the episodes as darker, which seemingly isn't the case. If I were to guess, it would have something to do with the TV you watched it on like you mentioned.

It's just so weird, because my TV wasn't the only TV I ever watched SpongeBob on. I wonder if I just had bad memory and ONLY remember what it was like on my TV. It was what I watched SpongeBob on the most.

That second image looks so sharp wow!
I agree with Squidward1999 theory
You know what, the image probably looks really sharp because I downscaled it so it would actually let me upload. 1080p to less than standard def, which is what I assume is what the season was captured on. Since all the animation cells are out somewhere NOT in the offices, it's probably the same resolution shot in 1999 and 2000, though a little less. Same thing like how SpongeBob DVDs compress episodes to 640x480 and do not loose any quality.

Actually, wait. I own a SpongeBob DVD. Maybe I can compare Nature Pants, since it's an old SpongeBob Goes Prehistoric DVD from way back then. You know, old enough to where they included a demo of Battle For Bikini Bottom for PC.

Yep. I dunno. Top is DVD. Bottom is Amazon Prime Video. They look ever so slightly different. Though, Prime is more clear. That's not even a scaling thing. I downscaled both images to the same size. The colors may even be different, but that could just be, yknow, DVD compression. So could the clearer quality for Prime.

Now I'm determined, though. They had to of improved these episodes visually.

That disproves this, I think.

Here's an idea, compare episodes that are on the Nautical Nonsense and Sponge Buddies DVD to the It's a SpongeBob Christmas Blu-Ray.

You could see how the opening credits look much more sharper than on DVD.

Did they fix the dot crawl for season 2-3 as well? I haven’t had cable since 2015. I know Amazon prime has clean copies and so does Paramount Plus

DVD on bottom, Prime on top. I think they did, though, the inconsistent line sizes and odd colorization in this frame makes me wonder if they just upscaled them.

Visual proof that the old DVDs haven't aged a day since release (can't say the same for the HD seasons though...)

Well, except for those weird visual artifacts in season 2 and 3

the first season of SpongeBob SquarePants used Cel animation.
