I don't know if anyone's said this before, and I don't know if it was unintentional or painfully obviously intentional, but here's something I noticed about the first Spongebob movie.
The idea of Plankton suddenly going from "goofy villain" to "sociopathic dictator" doesn't feel very surprising. It's been foreshadowed since season 1 that he's not a very merciful character, to put it nicely.

Also, the death scene. In "Tea at the Treedome," we see Spongebob and Patrick almost die from dehydration.

And in "Hooky," Mister Krabs told Spongebob and Patrick to stay away from the hooks, for fear of (among other thing) ending up in a gift shop.

So where do Spongebob and Patrick end up in the first movie?

In a gift shop. In which they almost die of dehydration.
Also, (and PieGuyRulz pointed this out,) the movie's little plot of "Spongebob wants to be seen as a man rather than a kid and tries to prove himself, only to end up sulking in a kidde-themed resturant," does that sound familiar to you?
