Surprised nobody mentioned it on this forum.

Well, if you have seen some of the dubs of non-English speaking countries, leave some of your opinions of them. What is your favourite, what is non-favourite, what voices do you like and what actors, despite voicing the characters so long, have been going through Vocal Evolution and their voices has been changing throughout the seasons? The most "egregious" example is the Russian dub, but more about that later.

Here's a list on how SpongeBob characters are dubbed in Indonesia.m I'm going to talk about the main characters.

  • SpongeBob: SpongeBob is a curious case, that the VA (voice actor) have been replaced at least 5 times in 10 years span. The first voice actor sounds deeper and less "Spongey", it was used in season 1-3 around at 2003-2004, when SpongeBob was aired in an old, now-defunct channel "Lativi". When SpongeBob was moved to "Global TV" they changed the VA for season 1-3, now the sound is still kinda deep, but it's more squeaky, it's still used today. When post-movie SpongeBob finally enter Indonesia around 2007-2008 they changed the VA again, now the sound is more higher pitched and more accurate, it's used in season 4-mid5. Now in season 6 they changed it, again. However, for season mid 5-mid8 the voice is actually more accurate to the original, and my favorite. And then they changed it again for season mid8-9, and this time is horrible. SpongeBob does not sound like SpongeBob at all. The sound is too masculine and kinda deeper than the previous ones.
  • Patrick: Patrick VA remained consistent from beginning until now. The sounds is kinda like original Patrick, but he sounds more serious and less dumb, I forgot how he sounds in Lativi dub.
  • Squidward: Ditto as above. The sound is almost like original, but it feels more relaxed and arrogant. Which makes him feels better for me. Squidward's VA appears to be very famous in the industry probably, because I've heard lots of other dubbed characters from different shows (cartoon and anime) sounding like Squidward.
  • Mr. Krabs. Ditto. Sounds good, but looses his accent and speech style (because of language difference). i think Mr. Krabs also sounds a bit lighter.
  • Sandy: Ditto as Mr. Krabs. She obviously lose her Texas drawl and accent. As the result she sounds more relaxed and clear. However her VA still manages to imitate the original quite nicely.
  • Gary: They actually dubbed Gary's meows in Have You Seen This Snail. Yep it was stupid.
  • Plankton: Plankton sounds higher pitched and nothing like the original, menacing and deep sound. Here he sounds more goofy and squeaky, although it feels funnier.

I only speak English. Sry

In my country, Brazil, SpongeBob have the same voice actor since he started airing around here.
  • SpongeBob's voice is very alike the original in english, but the voice actor changed a little his voice, to adapt more, because he said SpongeBob's laugh and voice sometimes made his throat hurt a lot. The only thing change of SpongeBob's voice, is that, nowdays, looks like his voice actor don't put more "emotion" on SpongeBob's voice, since his throat hurts.
  • Patrick had 3 voice actors, all looked like the original in english, and their voices didn't differ much.
  • Squidward had 2 voice actors, but it was because of the first voice actor's death after the first SpongeBob movie, their voices sounds like the original in english, and didn't differ much.
  • Mr. Krabs had 4 voice actors, the voices were pretty alike, and alike the original one in english.
  • Sandy's voice is made by the same voice actress, since the first episode, but her voice doesn't sound like the original one in english, is more a girly voice, and I prefer the brazillian voice.
  • Plankton's voice I didn't noticed any change in his voice, his voice isn't very much alike Mr. Lawrence voice, Mr. Lawrence has a awesome voice, and I think it's hard to "copy" LOL
  • Unfortunatelly, others characters aren't voiced by the same voice actor in all episodes. So not much to say about them.
One thing that I must say here, is that SpongeBob's voice in Portuguese-Brazil is the most alike Tom Kenny's voice compared to others around the world, Brazil has the best voice acting of all world :3

And now Squidward and Patrick VA for Season 8-9 are so :dolphin noise: weird

just Mr. Krabs VA who survived from S1-S9

In German, Patrick underwent an actor change, though I have no opinions on the change.

SpongeBob has always been voiced by Santiago Ziesmar, and I absolutely adore him!

Squidward was voiced by the late Eberhard Prüter, whom I'd also really liked, but as he passed last year, well.. yeah. A new actor was in the new movie, but I really can't remember what he sounded like. So, I couldn't say if it's good or bad. Eberhard Prüter had also done Squilliam's voice, though I was not fond of it.

Generally I like the German dub a lot.

I've also seen the Dutch and French dubs.

I love Squidward in French, he's just so much fun to listen to! "Je suis le roi de la clarinette!" LOL!! (From Patricia, when he's unwittingly hitting on Patrick with the claim that he's known as the king of the clarinet.)

SpongeBob (Bob l'éponge)'a French voice is... not so fitting. I find him Farr too deep-voiced.

I can't stand Squilliam in French or German, though. They are SO off they make me cringe. In Dutch, however, he sounds great.

Patrick sounds good across the board, if I'm not mistaken. I can't remember his Dutch voice, but German and French are good.

I also have Spanish (Spain, not Mexico), but I've only watched like once, and can't remember the voices at all.

I like the Dutch dub. SpongeBob sounds pretty good.

I don't like the dubs where SpongeBob's voice is too deep or grown-up sounding. I think the French one is like this and it just sounds creepy to me.

yeah the french one is pretty awful in general, they didn't even tried giving plankton a deep voice or make mr krabs sound like a sailor, they just renamed him captain krabs instead

I love that one too. Squidward's called Octo in it

In the German dub the chocolate guy says Chocolarder in a London accent and Squidward's 4ply song in Polish is beautiful.

Yeah, in the French dub, SpongeBob's voice is deep. I don't like it either.

Yeah, I love that! Octo Tentakel. I really like the Dutch dub in general.

In the German dub, the chocolate fish says "Schokolade!", which is German for chocolate. The "e" on the end is pronounced sort of an "uh" or "ah" type sound. (That episode just played again today on TV here in Germany, so my memory's quite fresh.)

I've heard SpongeBob's laugh in other countries, and it sounds very strange...

I am a huge fan of Eberhard Prüter, from the moment I first heard him as Squidward Tentacles and was pleasantly surprised by how different it was from Rodger Bumpass' original nasally and increasingly more annoying voice. It was definitely easier on the ears and I was delighted by how strongly expressive his voice was as well. He made his performance sound so real and relatable! I like the little touches he adds to his performance like when instead of screaming in Can You Spare a Dime?, he gasps in horror. So much energy, and at the same time so much subtlety. He really made the character his own. And he and Santiago Ziesmer, who's also really unique and special, worked off each other perfectly. So I'm going to have to get used to Ziesmer-Kaps exchanges from now on.
And his voice was so unique. Probably the most unique among all the German voice actors. And that's why it hurt so much when he died. Because it must have been so difficult to find a voice actor to replace him with so much individuality and so much talent.

I'm glad they went with Joachim Kaps in the end, even though he wasn't quite as good. I think they should have gone with Tobias Lelle as a replacement, though. Both men did marvellously in their auditions in any case.

I really like the German dub (SpongeBob Schwammkopf).

Today I decided to celebrate when Prüter would have been 71 by watching episodes with his best performances. I'm surprised no one did that on German TV after his passing.
