(Not really a fun) fact:

The concept of SpongeBob experiencing "sadness" was not introduced until episode 03b, Plankton! (as well as crying)

In Help Wanted, SpongeBob is too ashamed of himself to go into the Krusty Krab, but he's not sad. He's just too nervous and disappointed of himself. He's fearful, not sad.

In Ripped Pants, you may argue that SpongeBob gets sad at the beginning when he rips his pants, but I argue it's humiliation. He's not quite expressing sadness, either. Even when everyone leaves him and he becomes a loser on the beach, he never really gets sad. It's a point of reflection.

And, well, look at this.

This (in turn) means that SpongeBob's iconic laugh was introduced *after* SpongeBob crying, in Naughty Nautical Neighbors. (No, Plankton! does not count because he sounds like an anchovy. I said his ICONIC one.)

The next few times he experiences sadness to the point of crying is Home Sweet Pineapple, Nature Pants, and F.U.N.

Fun fact: if you look closely, you might be able to see that SpongeBob is yellow
