I got to wondering one day, in SpongeBob's world, do countries exist underwater? If so, what would be the name of the country that Bikini Bottom is located in? Given that the languages English, Spanish, French and German have been mentioned by name in the show, that could imply that underwater countries have the same names as countries on the surface

Is Bikini Bottom itself a micro state? Or given the fact it has never been stated what country Bikini Bottom is in, does that mean the concept of countries does not exist underwater?

I know it's an unimportant thing to talk about :P , but I'm curious to know what you all think?

Well, Rock Bottom is a different place than Bikini Bottom, so it's implied that there are different towns anyway. And then there's stuff like Atlantis and New Kelp City or whatever it was. The ocean is so big that "countries" are probably just the names of the oceans (i.e. Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, etc.). But my guess would be that fish under the sea just refer to where they are by the town that they live in- that's what Spongebob and pals do, anyway.

As for land countries, I think they would exist even if the Bottomites just see them as "the land." Spongebob was seen traveling all over the world in Treats! to get Gary's favorite snail goodies. And it's established Sandy came from Texas, so that's the U.S. In that episode, Sandy, Spongebob and Patrick had knowledge of traditional Texas things so I guess the knowledge does exist even if undersea creatures don't use it for themselves.

There's also the "Dead Sea" The name's not literal but it's an interesting thing to think about. I definitely want to make up my own area and ideas based around the Dead sea if you want to help with details.

The ocean's not only big, like PinkPearl said, it's also deep. So there could exist a town or country deeper than
"Rock Bottom" If you really think about it. And if you've played Ecco the Dolphin Tides of Time, there's a level called "Sea of Darkness" Where everything's really dark, Rock Bottom was dark (not because it was nighttime either, as Bikini Bottom's isn't that dark at night.) but imagine a town or country that's literally so dark that our characters can't even see.

And if the fish, octopi or crabs ect, live somewhere like say, the "Indian Ocean" would they have different accents? I mean, different from our main characters or side characters like Larry, Ms.Puff, the octopi in Squidvile or Squilliam?
Also, were they still in Bikini Bottom in the episode, "Frozen Face-off?"

Maybe the people working on SpongeBob should do this.

Perhaps the cities in the show are actually city-states spread throughout the ocean without belonging to any country. Real countries probably exist but the ones underwater don't know them.

Supported by the episode "Treats", I would say yes there are countries in SpongeBob's world.

Above water countries have to, Texas has been mentioned a few times so that's a given. Underwater countries I don't think so, it's just cities and regions which are all led by King Neptune anyways. He doesn't need to distinguish different countries to my knowledge, he's a jerk to everybody! :D
