Are there any running gags that have run their course?

I don't keep up with Spongebob as much these days, but Plankton trying to steal the formula just feels very... worn out? Anytime it happens, we know that Plankton rarely ever succeeds in actually stealing it and if he does, he usually gets caught quickly. I say it's time to retire this bit.

Spongebob's obliviousness being exaggerated. He barely ever reacts to what's happening around him anymore. He doesn't panic, get upset or angry, no matter what's happening.

If "Nasty Patty" was made today, he'd probably start laughing and go along with it without even breaking a sweat.

I think pretty much most characters just lost logical reasoning (besides Squidward and Sandy, maybe).

yeah spongebob and patrick are almost interchangeable sometimes, sponge will have almost no objections to any of patrick's stupid ideas and will just go along with it, an episode like wet painters probably couldn't be made today because that episode's best jokes is spongebob's reactions to patrick's braindead behavior.

also, spongebob doesn't really get any moments where he's pushed to anger anymore, when was the last time we got an episode like "can you spare a dime". one of the reasons why i don't prefer post-sequel over pre-movie is that i think spongebob himself got a little more boring as a character

Bubble Bass tbh. I remember seeing him in a Season 8 episode, which I think was his first appearance since Season 1, and being happy that he returned, was also nice to see him in SooW, but as the show went along, he got over-used and I actively consider him my least-favourite SpongeBob character just cause of how annoying he is in the newer episodes.

SpongeBob just seems to be a yes-man to Krabs these days. SpongeBob used to stand on his ground in episodes like Patty Hype and like you mentioned, Can You Spare a Dime, he wasn't blind and always accepting of Krabs' shenanigans and thoughts.

bubble bass is the only character/joke they brought back into post-sequel that actually works imo

I don't have an issue with Bubble Bass being in the new seasons, but I wish the writers use him beyond fat jokes.

For me personally, I think the recent seasons have ruined the "MY LEG!" gag. The episode itself was fine, but the characters didn't really need to scream it out LOUD. Plus, the old recording from season 1 was iconic, IDK why Mr Lawrence has to record new voice lines for it now instead of recycling the one that was first used in "Boating School."
