291a. Swimming Fools

They did it! They finally made a Season 13 episode that I can actually say, with complete confidence, was good. Not perfect, but good. I like the way they portrayed Squidward here, it's the version of him that we all want to see - he pretends not to like whatever SpongeBob and Patrick are doing, while in reality, he actually really loves it and wants to hide that. The atmosphere is great too, I'm a sucker for these kinds of summer episodes. There are a few problems though. I didn't find the episode all that funny. There were some jokes I liked (Patrick swimming home was decently funny for instance) but there were also quite a few jokes that fell flat. The pacing wasn't great either, like for instance the ending dragged on for way longer than it needed to. The pacing messes with the story a bit as well. At first it's just the typical Squidward trying to resist SpongeBob & Patrick plot, but then it turns into Squidward trying to hide that he went swimming. If they wanted to go with the plot of the latter, they should've had that part happen sooner, and they should've spent more time with the whole Squidward inflatable thing. But these aspects aren't enough to ruin the episode. It's still a good time and there are a lot of things here that I liked, and for the first time all season, there wasn't anything that was frustrating or annoying to me! Yay!

8/10

hilarious episode, so many great moments. Hopefully season 13 continues this energy til the end of the season! 8/10

I wouldn't hold my breath but hey at least we got a great episode this time
Yeah I watched it. It was a pretty solid episode. But man did it remind me of Idiot Box. The animation and production music were high-quality as usual, and that ending with the diving board speaks for itself.

7/10, maybe.

It reminds me of stuff like Idiot Box and Snowball Effect as well, but in a good way. It's a classic formula that's been missing for so long and I'm happy to have it back.
i guess so, but I wish they did a little more to make it more original. At least it’s better than Gary’s Playhouse

EXCELLENT episode. Very season 1-3esque. The classic formula of Squidward acting like he doesn't want to enjoy SB and Pat's (insert activity here) when he really does. This is an example of Squid torture done right, he was a jerk at the beginning and had he not acted the way he did he wouldn't have put himself in the situation he did. It really feels like the series is going in the right direction. 9/10

The plot felt a lot like pre-movie. The episode itself kinda did too, except it was wackier and it had, well, the usual kind of dumbed-down characterization of post-sequel, but it wasn't too much of a problem. Starting out in the end and telling the story from the beginning is also new for SpongeBob I think. It's a pretty creative and fun episode. My only issue is when Squidward is lifted into space and then falls down with the board. That one wasn't deserved. This is a very good episode, but it doesn't beat my current favorite s13 episode (Delivery to Monster Island) imo.

Well the title of this episode is giving “SpongeGuard on Duty”, which is not an episode I’ve thought about in a while. So it’s nice to have this reminder of old things. Other than that, I know nothing about this episode whatsoever. So I’m going in completely blind, which is always a treat.

NO WAY. NO FREAKING WAY.

“Squid Noir” 2?? Is that what this is? Is that what I’m seeing right now? I’d know that Squidward narrating voice anywhere. And an episode that uses a How We Got Here trope is already a win in my books. As you can see, immediately upon starting this episode I was very excited and hooked. Even without the “Squid Noir” connection, this is a very good opening that immediately gets us viewers interested, so this episode is starting off very well. Squidward’s recollection of the events that got him here start with him trying to enjoy a relaxing day but getting disturbed by SpongeBob shoveling sand straight into his mouth. Well, that’s one way to ruin someone’s day.

How could SpongeBob do something so wasteful like putting in a pool? Smh, you live near a beach! I’d like to know what counts as a “sophisticated pool”, according to Squidward. SpongeBob somehow manages to make a gorgeous pool, and Squidward’s extremely jealous. Well why don’t you put your money and elbow grease where your mouth is then Squidward? It’s funny hearing Squidward say “pool” so much, because is that even a word we’ve heard in this show before, outside of “Chocolate With Nuts”? And also I’m a little bit with Squidward, I kind of prefer A/C to swimming. But that’s just because when I swim I have to then wash my hair which is annoying if it’s literally any day but wash day so. Yeah. Squidward’s air conditioning breaking right after this is of course expected and yet still a funny joke pay-off. It also reminds me of when our A/C broke this summer…well it didn’t break, but our power was out for days so same diff.

It’s funny watching this episode when it’s winter like it is now. I wish it was hot outside. But I guess it will be again in a few months, so I can wait. Anyway, Squidward gets tempted to use SpongeBob’s pool by his own hallucinations. His losing it face is amusing. Gary catches Squidward using the pool, because he’s just the best like that, but luckily for Squidward, he doesn’t rat him out…just gives him a good slap in the face. It’s nice to see all different kinds of squids during Squidward’s dream sequence. They don’t all just look like carbon copies of Squidward, is what I mean by that. And the dream sequence is rather relaxing while also being entertaining. I like that.

Squidward wakes up the next day still in the pool, and he doesn’t want SpongeBob and Patrick to see him, so he does a very Scooby-Doo run into the pool shed. Which SpongeBob and Patrick immediately go into. And of course when Squidward disguises himself as a toy, that’s the one Patrick chooses. Becuase the rule of comedy. Well now I think I can see how Squidward got into this situation. I’m surprise he committed to the bit so much. Though he eventually has enough and has to admit to what he’s done. I’m honestly surprised, I feel like we don’t get this kind of moment in the show very much, with Squidward actually being completely honest. Squidward then gets a wholesome moment of being able to use SpongeBob’s pool…at least for a second, because come on now, we still need some comedy. These ladder shenanigans are hilarious. And they show us exactly how Squidward ended up face down in the pool, looking like Kendall Roy.

So I guess “Swimming Fools” wasn’t “Squid Noir” 2 like I thought. I feel baited. But I’m also not really that upset about it because this episode was really good. Like it was so funny and yet so simple. I loved every second of it. Easily one of my favorites from this season.

Episode Tier: Amazing
Episode Score:
9.6/10
