This episode was amazing. 9/10

This episode along with the one that follows were the highlights of The Tidal Zone for me. A concept that's sort of been done before, but not in this way. It kind of reminded me of a combination of "Born Again Krabs" and "Money Talks." I don't normally notice animation errors but there was a pretty blatant one here with the phone not being attached to Krabs toward the end when he gives the KK to Plankton yet him still being under the mind control. Of course anything that happens in the Tidal Zone is non-canon so Plankton getting the Krusty Krab and keeping it means nothing (of course the series canon is bad anyway). 8.5/10

Automatically the best tidal zone segment because of Plankton scenes (as you can tell by my account I'm a Plankton fan lol)

Coming up next in our Tidal Zone special episodes, we’ve got “You’re Going to Pay…Phone”. The concept of this episode seems delightfully cheesy and corny. I mean a cursed payphone? Please, this sounds like a blast. It also adds to the timeless factor of the show, using old yet ubiquitous technologies.

I love the way that the French Narrator has been opening these episodes. The green screening has definitely improved over the years, that’s for sure. But idk, something about the way we cut into the episode is just satisfactory to me. I won’t call this shot of the Krusty Krab a gorgeous background alert, but it is a very nice background otherwise. The first real event of the episode is Mr. Krabs leaving the Krusty Krab after a long day of earning money, just to come across a quarter that he chases after. I like the way that the quarter literally turns back to look at Mr. Krabs when he gets too tired to run. Like how considerate of the quarter to allow Mr. Krabs to splash himself with some water that came from nowhere.

The quarter leads Mr. Krabs to a very neat looking building, where it then jumps into a payphone. Hmmm…seems suspicious. Apparently the building is an emporium owned by a very old seastar…what is with these starfish??? Anyway, because money is the only language that Mr. Krabs speaks, he doesn’t care that the free payphone he’s taking is cursed. I wonder what the curse is going to be, I hope it’s something creative.

Looks like the curse is brainwashing. Hmmm…not quite what I was looking to see, but I’ll take it. Maybe that one Regular Show episode with the prank calls has just spoiled me too much on call-based curses. Though now that I bring that up, I’m realizing that this episode has the vibes of a “Terror Tales of the Park” episode. The phone makes Mr. Krabs give away his patties and then his money…what’s this phone’s problem?? Is Plankton behind this??? Something’s fishy…and it gets even fishier when the phone says to give away the Krusty Krab. Though it turns out that Plankton isn’t behind it considering he’s outside the restaurant ready to blow it up with a laser. Hmmmm very interesting.

So I guess it turns out that there’s a literal demon inside the phone. Yeah sure, why not. And he also makes Mr. Krabs switch places with him. I’m surprised that the episode actually ends with Plankton still owning the Krusty Krab, and Mr. Krabs fully losing. But I guess like last episode, this is just a weird alternate universe in the Tidal Zone, so who cares if the status quo is not upheld? Also, I really like how the end of this episode transitions into the next one. That’s something very new, and I really like it. Next time we have a 3-part episode like this, I want this to happen again.

I have to say that SpongeBob isn’t particularly the sharpest in this episode, as he’s clearly confused by the way Mr. Krabs is acting, but doesn’t really question it…and doesn’t question the phone sticking on the side of his eye stalks. Plankton also recognizes that Mr. Krabs is acting weird, but at least he has a reason to ignore it. I suppose in the case of SpongeBob, he’s at least being consistently characterized throughout this episode, as he doesn’t bat an eye at the demon who appears out of nowhere, and even gives him a quarter.

“You’re Going to Pay…Phone” is a perfectly fine episode. For some reason, it feels like a better version of “A Pal For Gary” even though both episodes are not even that similar to each other. My main qualm is what I said earlier with SpongeBob being completely unhelpful here, but I mean this is the Tidal Zone, so I’ll chalk it up to that. Other than that, the episode is a little bit repetitive given its chosen structure, and there aren’t enough gags in there to really improve that for me.

Episode Tier: Good
Episode Score: 7.1/10
