278b. Slappy Daze

The plot has been revealed: Nosferatu's minion Slappy kills some time around Bikini Bottom.

1/10 this episode was pretty bad

As I predicted I would I hated this episode. Slappy should have never had an episode mostly focusing him. It's not very funny and its boring if you ask me. By far the worst of season 13 so far.

Ridiculous Episode

I like how these new seasons are adding new characters like Slappy, Rube Goldfish and Lady Upturn. Now when do they make new plots???

5.5/10

Shouldn't exist, complete filler. (I don't dislike it but I definitely don't like it, it's very very very mediocre)

Now this is exactly what I’m talking about! Not the episode, necessarily, as I haven’t even watched it yet, but the structure of this and its sister. Remember how I said that “SpongeBob’s Road to Christmas” could’ve been shortened and then paired with another Christmas episode? Well “Squidferatu” and “Slappy Daze” did this exact premise. “Slappy Daze” is the shorter of the two, and because of its focus on Slappy, it almost feels like a continuation of “Squidferatu”. So kind of like “Krusty Koncessionaires” and “Dream Hoppers”, except without such a direct connection. I just really think that this two episode thing is the way to go. And I mean, SpongeBob SquarePants has done this with its Halloween specials from the very beginning, with “Scaredy Pants” and “I Was A Teenage Gary”, so I’m not quite so surprised by this, but it’s also really nice to see this structure again.

Alright, so let’s address the elephant in the room right here, right now: Slappy is a character that you either love or hate. You can either get into his whole caricature, or you can’t. I, for one, am one of the people who…can’t. Surprisingly, it’s not the voice that does it for me, but the visuals. They…unnerve me. And so I feel an automatic reaction to turn away. This wasn’t so much of a problem in “Squidferatu”, as Slappy’s presence was pretty minimal there. This episode, by contrast, is all about him.

Not this episode beginning with a gorgeous background alert, and just a cool shot of Bikini Bottom in general. This is one of those episodes that does the thing that I’ve already said I don’t like, which is focus on a new character we don’t care about. Now, to this episode’s credit, we have seen Slappy a few times before this, which helps immensely. However, as I’ve already said, I don’t much care for Slappy. And we’re bombarded with a lot of new stuff here. Like the entirely new location we go too, and Dr. Calamari. I don’t necessarily dislike this, but I’m not much invested either.

Slappy spends time in Bikini Bottom, very clearly sticking out being washed up in this vibrant world. It’s nice to see him have some fun, I guess. I liked the joke with poor Gary ending up getting the brunt of that lady’s kiss. The way Slappy just floats out of the store is hilarious, and the pan to SpongeBob’s face is as well. So far that’s the only joke I’ve really liked, but that’s okay. At least the episode isn’t boring, which can be the greatest crime at times.

There really isn’t much for me to say about “Slappy Daze”, because I feel like not much happens. Given that this is an 8-minute episode, this is just about acceptable. Again, the episode isn’t boring, but there isn’t really much for me to say. I’m also kind of confused about the whole thing with Nosferatu hypnotizing people. I thought that was going to lead to him not actually getting cured, but then he was?? So I don’t know, the ball felt dropped on that one. And again, I don’t really dislike Slappy, but I don’t much like him either, so having the whole episode follow him wasn’t particularly my desire.

Episode Tier: Okay
Episode Score: 6.7/10
