Well then…I wasn’t quite expecting to get to this episode so soon. I didn’t realize that it and “Hiccup Plague” were so close together. Welp. Today’s episode is “Kwarantined Krab”, an episode that’s so present because of its absence. What do I mean? Well, I mean the fact that this episode not only had a delayed premiere date, but also that it was excluded from the complete season 12 DVD (which I own) altogether. And that’s because this episode is unintentionally quite similar to the COVID-19 pandemic. Like with “Hiccup Plague”, I’ll discuss more of this elephant in the room after I’ve finished with the main review.
Remember how I was saying that I was happy to see Mrs. Puff and Pearl interact in “Hiccup Plague”, and then again in “A Cabin in the Kelp”? Well clearly, somebody heard me, because this episode begins with Mr. Krabs, Mrs. Puff, and Pearl. I expect to see a lot more of this in the future if the show is to continue on the track of Mr. Krabs and Mrs. Puff in a relationship. This episode actually begins with quite the cast of characters in the Krusty Krab, with SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward of course being there. I loved the bit with Mrs. Puff and SpongeBob having apparently agreed (I’m sure with Mrs. Puff leading the charge) that outside of class, they don’t know each other. This poor woman is so tormented by SpongeBob lmao.
The health inspector suddenly busts in (along with a funny joke from Mr. Krabs about bribing him already…the jokes in this episode are already excellent and we’re like a minute in, that’s a great sign). Turns out, the health inspector is here because someone in the restaurant is infected with the Clam Flu. Oh boy. Yeah this is really calling the pandemic to mind isn’t it. The entire restaurant is put under quarantine, which makes everyone freak out. And, turns out Plankton’s there too, as he’d been ready to hatch a plot to steal the formula. Again, quite the cast of characters. Well, Plankton’s not there for very long, because when be breaks quarantine, he is literally burned to death LMAO. The suddenness of it all made it really funny. I wish COVID-19 had been handled with such efficiency. See, that’s the sadder part about this episode. Where the episode had been originally delayed and removed because it called the pandemic to mind, bringing unfortunate associations, nowadays my issue with it (if we can call it that) is that the cartoon handled a pandemic better than the actual government did. So it hurts my escapism in a different way.
Mr. Krabs proposes a solution to getting everyone out of quarantine faster: find the sick person and isolate them so that they can all leave. I have my qualms with the way sick people are treated in society in general, but I’m too tired for my soapbox today. So let me just sit back and enjoy what’s to come. And what’s to come does rather remind me of the pandemic, of the wild hysteria of the times when we were in the “thick” of it (see, I’m trying not to use language that implies that the pandemic is over, because it’s not, no matter how much world governments want you to believe it is so).
It doesn’t take very long for Mr. Krabs’ solution to hit a snag—no one is volunteering that they’re the sick one. And that very soon devolves into baseless accusations, like Squidward saying that SpongeBob is the sick one after he sneezed upon getting a pepper shaker stuck in his nose. I do always like a locked-door mystery. It’s one of my favorite tropes, actually. Quite unfortunate that this is the subject matter though, lol. SpongeBob volunteers to go into the freezer, using that same self-sacrificing tendency we saw in “Hiccup Plague”, complete with the dramatics. At least this time, SpongeBob actually walks himself into quite the fun situation, as he’s skiing and eating ice cream and having a grand old time in the freezer.
Meanwhile, Patrick sees SpongeBob eating ice cream, so he decides to fake being sick so that he’ll get into the freezer too. Oh man, I am really seeing some parallels now. This is crazy LMAO. Mr. Krabs immediately throws Patrick into the freezer, so now the two best friends get to have some fun. You’d think this might stop the hysteria and paranoia, but of course not. Now all that’s left are the people who bought into the paranoia in the first place. And so when Squidward scratches his arm, they throw him into the freezer.
And then there were three—Mr. Krabs, Mrs. Puff, and Pearl. Funnily enough, the three we started this episode with. Things move a lot quicker than I expected though, as we’re not even 6 minutes into the episode when Mrs. Puff yawns and Mr. Krabs immediately throws her in the freezer. Man…cold blooded. But hey, does this mean we get to see some Mr. Krabs and Pearl interactions? Well, we do…and it consists of Mr. Krabs being suspicious of Pearl actually giving him some change back after a trip to the mall, so into the freezer she goes. Well then, this episode has turned out to be similar to “Plankton Paranoia”…which is an episode I adored, so that’s good for this one.
In the world of the freezer, everybody’s having a good time. And they all realize that none of them are sick, which only leaves one culprit…Mr. Krabs. Squidward proposes they bust out of the freezer and lock Mr. Krabs in instead. Squidward even manages to convince SpongeBob, who hilariously gets cold-blooded. Well, I can already tell that’s going to be quite the struggle…I’m interested. And so the chaos begins with Patrick launching himself at Mr. Krabs (ah, Patrick actually getting mad, I love it!). I literally cannot stop laughing at the way Mr. Krabs flattens himself here. I just really love this entire scene, this is my favorite kind of action-filled chaos.
The health inspector comes back at night, and he walks in on the restaurant being a pure and utter mess. I can already assume what the twist of this episode is going to be (that no one is sick at all), but let’s see what happens. Well, I find out that I’m right immediately, so that’s always fun. But this episode isn’t over yet. See, because even though none of the people in the restaurant were sick initially, their fighting left them all infected with one disease or another. I love the atmosphere here, it reminds me a lot of “Pineapple Fever”. And this ending makes me think that “Kwarantined Krab” might work well as a Halloween episode.
Alright, so, let’s chat the elephant in the room. Like I said in my review of “Hiccup Plague”, I can easily see why “Kwarantined Krab” was delayed, and even removed from the season 12 DVD. Now, while I am okay with the former, I don’t think the latter was very smart. I understand why it was removed from the DVD, as the DVD came out while the episode was still being delayed, but you know what other episode was being delayed but still made it on the DVD? “Hiccup Plague” (kind of). And without even thinking of that episode, I just think that, considering what we know now about how all these digital media can be erased in the blink of an eye, preservation through physical media is very important. Without “Kwarantined Krabs” being in a physical release, this episode could have easily been erased, period. Luckily, it was only temporarily shelved. But that could’ve ended quite differently. But back to the reasoning behind delaying this episode, I get it, I truly do. This episode brings to mind a lot of different facets of this pandemic, and perhaps not in the best way. It truly is remarkable that this episode was made before the pandemic, becuase it hit on so many parts of it. But I suppose it’s not all that surprising. I mean, people had been predicting a global pandemic for years before it happened. Combine that with a general understanding of the way that many Americans behave, and it’s easy to predict anything (why do you think The Simpsons is so good at it?).
Thinking about the episode itself now, I really liked “Kwarantined Krab”. The only thing I didn’t like were some of the visuals at the end, they were a bit too gross for me, but I’ll live. This episode was just so enjoyable and really funny. And I like the characters involved too. I think it was the perfect amount, as much as I would’ve loved the entire main cast being here. Everyone just bounced off each other really well.
