290a. Spatula of the Heavens

This is my new favorite episode of season 13 for sure! Not only the concept is awesome but the setup is excellent. Jokes are great and plus this is your normal everyday fun episode!

10/10 PERFECT!

I thought this one was a little boring it’s got a couple funny moments tho 6.5/10

The title card of this episode is mesmerizing its beautiful I think its really funny too! 9/10

It's decent. I like how Rube just randomly appears and then leaves SpongeBob when his shift is over. The whole adventure of SpongeBob going up to the mountain was pointless since Guru just shows up at the Krusty Krab at the end but that's also part of the joke. 7.5/10

EDIT: I love the random reappearance of SpongeTom from Broken Alarm. He's becoming sort of a running gag of almost replacing SpongeBob when he's out but then not needed at the last minute when SpongeBob returns. I laughed at his catchphrase "I'm prepared!" He's an odd goofy knockoff of SpongeBob.

Pretty good episode but I've expected better. Some parts feel like it wasn't easy for the writer to fill out the 11 minute duration.

…do I even need to say it? Yes, the title of this episode, “Spatula of the Heavens” makes what’s about to come sound exactly like “Neptune’s Spatula” and “Trident Trouble”. However, it doesn’t have to be. I haven’t heard about this episode at all, so I’m inclined to think that it isn’t as similar to those two episodes as the title implies, or else I woulda been hearing rip-off all over the place.

This episode immediately catches me off guard by using a fade in transition instead of what the normal bubble wipe looks like. It was just…wrong. Let’s not do that again. Anyway, in terms of the actual content of the episode, the Krusty Krab is so busy that they can’t even give the background fish any details. Been a long time since we were in that phase of the art style. I’m realizing that I would absolutely hate Squidward’s job. I mean I already knew that, I have been a cashier before, but at a place as busy at the Krusty Krab I think I’d end it all. I also would not want to be in a crowd of this magnitude.

Okay, less tangent, more review. We watch an amusing sequence of SpongeBob cooking a whole bunch of patties, but it ends with SpongeBob accidentally leaving his spatula on the grill…uh oh. He tries to save it, but it falls apart. Well, this is definitely not where I expected this episode to go, so I’m more interested now. Just like “All That Glitters”, SpongeBob is quite dramatic about breaking his trusty spatula, and he refuses to cook with any of the other janky ones Mr. Krabs keeps in the closet. See, I’d refuse on the grounds that those are probably health violations lmao. I love how SpongeBob starts sounding like a loon after a second, it’s really funny. Also helps to make this episode different than “All That Glitters” or “Evil Spatula”. I also liked the SpongeTom gag at the end of the scene, his variation on SpongeBob’s signature catchphrase is great.

So now SpongeBob is off on a quest to get his spatula reforged. Well I’m loving how seriously the episode is taking this. Well…seriously is not the right word. More like…the episode is delivering on the gravitas SpongeBob was using to describe his spatula. This reminds me a lot of Infinity War and that one Teen Titans episode where Robin goes to train with the master of the mountain (Fun note: I have many problems with the 2003 Teen Titansadaptation, but Robin was never one of them). I like all the environments we see SpongeBob in as he goes on this quest. Sure, much of the quest was largely skipped over, but that’s because those minutes were replaced with seconds of a fun montage. A worthy trade.

I know I rag on a lot of the new characters (actually, I don’t, just Slappy), but I really love Rube. He’s a good addition to the show. Reminds me a lot of Howard from “New Fish In Town”, for whatever reason. It’s kind of funny that the first time we see Rube is him being a tourist, and now his character is about giving out tours and exploring places. Rube is randomly on this mountain that SpongeBob’s just climbed, giving out yet another tour. Well ain’t that convenient for the little dude. I also love the animated Dolly Zoom we get here when SpongeBob sees the shady-looking bridge. Rube’s continued positivity in the face of literal death is so funny to me, especially when SpongeBob is the one being the foil.

SpongeBob has to face the next part of his perilous journey alone, climbing up the dangerous part of the mountain. But he makes it to the top well enough, where a hooded person is sitting with a spatula in hand. And of course, when everything seems like it’s going to go just fine, SpongeBob manages to drop like 10 anvils on the guy’s hands, so he can’t reforge the spatula. I like how Grease Trap tries to get out of actually doing any work by giving SpongeBob some spiritual nonsense, but that doesn’t work because SpongeBob’s not bright, so now he’s gotta teach SpongeBob how to reforge his spatula. I better be seeing some epicness, because I need this episode to commit to the bit. Thankfully, I have nothing to worry about. We see SpongeBob going through some “rigorous training”, to mixed effectiveness. I have got to wonder what’s going down at the Krusty Krab LMAO. SpongeTom has to be taking SpongeBob’s job by now.

Somehow, SpongeBob manages to reforge his spatula with no issue. But we’re only 8 minutes into the episode, so I’ve got to wonder what’s going to happen now. The most immediate thing that happens is Grease Trip giving SpongeBob a “shortcut” back to the Krusty Krab, which was predictable but still amusing. I like that before we even get to the Krusty Krab, we get a hint that none of SpongeBob’s training took as much time as it seemed to, as Rube is just then getting to his car when SpongeBob falls down the mountain. And I like that SpongeBob goes back through all the places we went through before, it’s like a bookend to the joke. Speaking of bookends, I like that Mr. Krabs has the same “early, right on time, late, too late” watch that SpongeBob has. Yes, this is a gag, but I’m going to count this in my quasi-father-son crumbs anyway.

Just as I expected, SpongeBob goes to cook a patty and his spatula breaks immediately. I had a feeling this would happen when we had so much time left. As always, SpongeBob’s dramatics about the whole thing are very entertaining. And I guess what Grease Trap said wasn’t complete mumbo jumbo after all, as his advice actually helps SpongeBob, as he makes himself a spatula. Well that sounds painful. I like the reveal that Grease Trap literally meant that the spatula was inside SpongeBob, and the ending joke of the episode was really funny, especially considering I was thinking something similar earlier with Mr. Krabs’ janky spatulas. Our brains are on the same page.

“Spatula of the Heavens” was a pretty fun episode. Where I thought it was going to be similar to “Neptune’s Spatula” or “Trident Trouble”, it actually ended up being far more similar to “All That Glitters” and “License to Milkshake”, but still quite different to all episodes involved. It was also just generally enjoyable. And I’m a sucker for episodes that take something more mundane and make it so dramatic for no reason.

Boring and unfunny episode, but I appreciate it being board-driven, I could tell the different style of writing Mr. Arcand was going for, even if I'm not really a fan. Plus he "wrote" (not really wrote but the ep was outlined with zero script) Dream Hoppers last season, which is tied with Skill Crane for the best of the show. Ian V./Ben A.'s direction on this episode was awesome though, a lot of really great visuals and drawings from both sides. 5/10

After rewatching it a few days back, I did enjoy this episode, it was quite funny. I guess your opinion can change if you've watched the same episode three seperate times. 8/10
