I find it really weird that Patrick and Gary are related. I would have prefered if it was SpongeBob and Patrick were related.

I would like to see an episode where SpongeBob became jealous of Patrick and Gary being related.

I think it's funny, but it's more of a joke than a significant plot point since it is never brought up outside of this episode (though I believe it is one of the trivia questions on the SpongeBob cereal box). I don't think it would work for them to make an entire episode based on it. It's a fun little "fact" - and I use that term loosely because honestly I would hesitate to count it as truly canon - but not something that needs to be brought up again.

I wouldn't want Spongebob and Patrick to be related because I enjoy shipping them waaay too much.

Imagine if Squidward and Spongebob turned out to somehow be distant cousins. Spongebob would be so overjoyed.

I could imagine that as an episode.

Spongebob repeatedly calling Squidward "cousin," Spongebob making a new holiday to celebrate the bond that cousins share, singing a song about cousins... all to Squidward's chagrin.

Yeah, it was on the cereal box! (The newest SB cereal I think) I was actually really surprised that it was one of the trivia questions, considering the fact that you wouldn't think they would pay attention/notice a detail like that from the episode :P

Nonetheless, it was pretty cool that they brought it back.

It was also I think a trivial fact in the SB Experience book. It's just a joke like DadMom said and they never talk about it again anyways. It makes sense why Patrick sometimes acts like a pet.. (see Grooming Gary)

Gary is probably much smarter than Patrick, if you think about it. He doesn't usually verbalize in a way we can understand, though.

It was also a puzzle you'd figure out through trivia on a SpongeBob annual from 2011.

I say no, cause Patrick...Starfish/seastar.

Gary...Shail/molluscs.

So no, they're not related. It's just a SpongeBob joke.
