Why doesn't Squidward wear pants?

Although many sea creatures choose to wear pants and clothes in general, there are so many fish who walk around naked or semi-naked that I think we can assume that clothing is a personal preference and not a social norm. Therefore, Squidward's pantslessness is perfectly acceptable.

What about the end of Pranks a Lot, then?
 
It all began on a cold winters night when Squidward was a child. His father had just come back from work holding himself a pair of sparkling trousers. At first, young Squidward and his mother were both intrigued by the pants, but that night, while Mr. and Mrs. Tentacles were slumbering, the pants came alive, equipping itself with a gun. Squidward's dad wakes up and shows mercy but it was too late. His eyes laided open as he slowly layed down. That morning, Squidward's mom wakes up the following morning noticing what appears to be blood on her duvet cover. She turned to her right and saw in horror. Her husband no longer breathing or living. She picked up the trousers that were sitting on Mr. Tentacles' lap and quickly ignited them. She goes straight to her baby boy and makes him promise that he will never ever EVER wear or own pants again...

Everybody is used to seeing SpongeBob and Patrick with pants on, so their nakedness was a novelty. That's all I got. :P

Hey, I really like Squidward's model in this picture. He looks tall and elegant.
Actually, I think he looks better with pants on.
 
Not all of the fish wear pants, so it isn't needed. Think about Plankton he doesn't even wear a shirt and don't say it's because no baby clothes fit him, he had a full Mr. Krabs suit in The Algae's Always Greener. (Maybe he can't afford them? I'm going off topic now. :P )
