It's a new day and I'm in the mood to post another episode so here's #20. Season 6 was on my mind again and just wow. Mr. Krabs is so unlikable in this episode, it's not even funny and I'm probably am going to include at least one other greedy Mr. Krabs episode in the Top 20 because there's one that I think is kinda worse than this one.
20.

Don't you hate it when Mr. Krabs is reduced to such a one note character to the point where all he cares about is money and nothing else and it's done in such a way that it feels like a whole lot of crap is being shoved down your throat? Well this episode is a really good example of that happening and sadly, it has Aaron Springer's name on it. This episode makes the Top 20 because it's a very blatant example of the flanderization that people keep talking about when it comes to Spongebob and it especially seemed to happen a lot during Season 6, which I honestly believe much of it's an abomination by any standard and one of the reasons that SpongeBob doesn't have as great of a reputation as it used to have.
I also wanted to balance out the list by including episodes with other characters that I didn't feel like I got into talking about with all the episodes that have made it so far, which have mostly been centered around SpongeBob or Squidward. It's a really ridiculous episode that it made me shake my head the entire time I watched it and it's a shame that this steaming pile had one of my favorite cartoonist's name credited to it. Bad episodes with seasoned professionals names on them are more likely to make me mad than something written by people with much less writing experience as you may have noticed in this countdown and no, I'm not quite done talking about some of Aaron's worst episodes after the movie. I might put another one of his after this one in particular on the countdown that I feel are shockingly bad.
The episode starts out with Mr. Krabs shopping at a Discount Grocery Mart and the audience is treated to some pretty boring, unfunny filler. Mr. Krabs has a little bit of a verbal argument with the cashier over expired coupons. They really go out of their way to overexaggerate Mr. Krabs's cheapness that it's already starting to hurt a little. Mr. Krabs buys his stuff and notices that SpongeBob's walking down the street, which is another non event that normally, I don't think Mr. Krabs would give a crap about what SpongeBob's doing unless he was costing him money. That would have been his most proper characterization but no, this episode decides to take the really stupid, over the top route and you'll see what I'm talking about soon.
Mr. Krabs wonders what SpongeBob is up to for pretty much no reason and he discovers that Spongebob found a penny on the ground. This for some reason really excites Mr. Krabs and not in a good way either. Look, I know he loves money but he's a much better, richer character when making money and being a tightwad aren't his only parts of his personality. As we have seen in other episodes long before this one was ever made, Mr. Krabs shows that he sometimes does have a heart for people like Spongebob and has even acted like a fatherly figure to him in several instances though he did have a lot of negative personality traits too.
This episode becomes even more boring when they repeat the same exact scene but as one of Mr. Krabs's thought bubbles. What a ::dolphin noise::ing waste of a scene here. There could have been something really funny and creative during that time but no, we're now recycling previous scenes. I mean REALLY????!!!!! Come on, Aaron. You're much better than this and I've seen so much of your other work and it's nothing like this piece of poorly thought out crap.
Why would anyone want to resort to using shortcuts on a show like SpongeBob, the very show that helped to keep funny drawings and cartoony animation alive and influence a lot of other cartoons later on. Maybe Aaron was just really burned out creatively by the time this season was put into production and if so, it's really sad and a shame that Nickelodeon doesn't even bother to care if any of the artists working on SpongeBob are feeling tired creatively and don't wanna do the show anymore.
It really proves how much of a soulless company Viacom really can be, but yet again, I think there are many corporations that are in a similar boat. Out of respect to them, I sometimes think it would have been better to have ended the show if it ever came to such a point so those people could move on and do way better stuff than this. Who cares how much money it makes for them? If you're not willing to go with what people on the show want, then you're doing a huge disservice to them IMHO. I apologize for getting a bit emotional with this rant but I didn't realize this episode would conjure up so many of my feelings about Nickelodeon as a whole and their inane practices.
Anyway, this episode becomes even stupider and more unbearable to watch as Mr. Krabs is driving home and he imagines EVERYTHING turning into pennies. I mean the steering wheel of the boat and even the moon and I thought Patrick running into the sun was really stupid and unfunny enough as it is!!!!!!! This takes the cake. Mr. Krabs screams that he really wants that penny. Come on, this is really becoming overkill. Just end this stupid episode now because it's really getting on my nerves and I don't think I can stomach it for much longer and to think I just thought it was another mediocre episode. This one really feels much worse thinking about it long and hard.
SpongeBob goes to the Krusty Krab and Mr. Krabs will not leave him alone at all. He's determined to get that penny and he won't stop, sort of like how SpongeBob wouldn't stop bugging Squidward in the previous episode I talked about here. Krabs makes SpongeBob find the penny in his pockets and it's just why didn't he just grab a penny from the cash register if he's so desperate. Thinking about it that way, it really makes this episode that much more pointless than it already is. And this scene goes on for way too long making it even more unfunny. Does this episode even have any decent jokes or is it just going to continue to waste my time?
Mr. Krabs vigorously shakes SpongeBob until his brain literally falls out and it grows legs and starts crawling. Ummmmmmm......why?????? This makes no sense and I think it could even have the potential to gross some people out. More blatant abuse of cartoon logic and a weak reference to The Dog Whisperer in this scene too. This episode is making my brain hurt now. This episode just keeps getting dumber and dumber as Mr. Krabs constructs a movie theater to lure Spongebob into giving up his penny and they make another weak joke about flipbooks. Look how Mr. Krabs reacts when SpongeBob tries to tell him that he doesn't have a penny.
(for the record, this pose actually looks kinda cool. Too bad it's in a really crappy episode. Quite a shame good talent was wasted.)
This causes him to tear down the movie theater that he made and comes up with another equally lame scheme. Have the Krusty Krab hold a charity event at night just so SpongeBob can give Mr. Krabs the penny. Now on top of being boring, this episode is trying to incorporate contrived pathos too. All not funny by the way. Later that night, Mr. Krabs parks outside of SpongeBob's house and uses a tracker and a metal detector to find that penny. At this point, I'm really worn out talking about how idiotic this episode is and how I hate Mr. Krabs so much in this one. He didn't have to go to such extreme lengths to have gotten what he wanted. Sadly we're not done here and Krabs even goes as far as to try to see if the penny is in Gary's shell. I mean this really speaks for itself.
How the heck did SpongeBob NOT notice what Mr. Krabs was doing to Gary here????? I mean really. I think this is a sign of what would be to come in later episodes where SpongeBob acts oblivious that he doesn't notice what's going on. And here comes one of the worst endings I've ever seen on this show. Mr. Krabs apologizes for what he did and that seems fine and dandy and then SpongeBob reveals that the "penny" he picked off the ground which clearly looked like a penny and was drawn like one is this green piece of gum which really turns out to be a 500 dollar bill????????????????????????????????????
WHAT????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't even describe how angry I am. This is just a really crappy crappy ::dolphin noise:: ending. Period. It makes absolutely NO sense and I am so done talking about this piece of crap episode. Really, I am. Utter face palm. This episode is much much worse than I remember it and I think if I could give it a rating, it would be somewhere between a 2 and a 3 out of 10.
