Before I talk about this, let me explain what the uncanny valley is for people who don't understand:
^That shows a robot or an object and how much like a human it is and how familiar it is. Before the uncanny valley is those things that look quite a bit like living things and are sort of cute. The very beginning all things that don't look like humans in any way. the end of it is all healthy humans. That big dip is all very human-ish things. Here, let me explain a little more.
The person on the left is, of course, Mr. Incredible. The reason he doesn't look creepy is because he looks a bit TOO unrealistic. The guy on the right is one of the characters from Mars Meets Moms, one of the most unsuccessful animated movies of all time. The guy on the right looks creepy because he is very close to looking like a healthy human but isn't. The uncanny valley is defined to look creepy all the time, another example is shown below:
Then I realized, the chart can somewhat refer to a few plots in SpongeBob. Let's take one right now; Squid's Day Off. Let's say there are 5 levels.
Level 1: No familiarities whatsoever
- things happen
Level 2: Some sort of familiarity
- a person is going crazy
Level 3: Good amount of familiarity
- a person is driving another person crazy
Level 5: Full plot
Read the plot description of Squid's Day Off for this one.
Then, there's level 4 which is the uncanny valley.
A man's boss has gotten seriously injured and is being taken to the hospital. This man has to take care of a younger worker, but chooses to leave him alone and let dangers happen to him instead. When he goes home to relax, he thinks about the dangers that the younger worker is facing, causing him mental turmoil. He mentally implodes as he keeps checking on the younger worker in paranoia. Sooner or later, he completely cracks and runs naked to the younger employer to see what he's doing. After the man finds out that the younger worker is okay, he finally realizes and regrets the bad choices he has made.
You see that? I just took the plot of Squid's Day Off and took out the child-friendly details and turned into the plot of an R-rated movie. That's the magic of the uncanny valley. All you have to do is eliminate a FEW of the more familiar traits of something and it can easily rub a person the wrong way.
